The story

By day I wear someone else's badge. I'm a senior engineer running governance for an estate that isn't mine: deciding who gets access to what, and keeping it all in line. Then I come home, put the kettle on at midnight, and build my own thing the same way. No investors, no board, just a roadmap and the hours.

In identity terms, a job is access someone else grants you. It's a role, and roles can be revoked. Titles change, contracts end, badges stop working. Equity is different. It's ownership, and nobody can revoke what you built and wrote your name on. That's the line this song draws between rent and deed.

It's also about who I build for. The plumber who laughed when I told him to get a website and is now booked every night. The barbers and builders, the small businesses that are the heart of the ends. I didn't have the degree they wanted on the sheet. I had night school, certifications and twenty years in the trade, and every job that underpaid me taught me something. So when people ask what you do, tell them what you own.

Key lines

  • “Salary's the rent on the life that you're in / Equity's the deed on the one you begin”
  • “Nine-to-five pays the rent, one a.m. pays the deed”
  • “Every job that underpaid me was a lesson I got paid”
  • “Titles get revoked. Equity don't.”
